About Plateau Historic District
The Plateau district formed the historic core of Praia, established by Portuguese colonists on a defensible plateau above the harbor from the sixteenth century onward. It grew as an administrative and commercial center for Portugal's Atlantic colonial network, eventually replacing Cidade Velha as Cabo Verde's capital in 1770. Its layout reflected Portuguese colonial urban planning.
