HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Place des Vosges & Le Marais.

The square retains its original early seventeenth-century ensemble of symmetrical brick and stone pavilions arranged around a central garden, largely unchanged in exterior form since its construction under Henri IV. The buildings and garden are owned by the City of Paris and the square is a classified historic monument, with individual apartments and shops in private hands. The garden and arcades are freely accessible to the public at all times.

About Place des Vosges & Le Marais

King Henri IV commissioned the Place Royale, now the Place des Vosges, in the early seventeenth century as a planned residential square in the Marais district of Paris. Built as symmetrical brick and stone townhouses around a central garden, it was inaugurated amid festivities marking a royal marriage. The square helped establish the Marais as a fashionable quarter.
