HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Pigeon Island National Landmark (incl. Fort Rodney).
The former island preserves the ruins of Fort Rodney, including gun batteries, powder magazines, officers' quarters, and barracks buildings of the Garrison, along with the causeway that now joins the island to the mainland. It is a National Landmark managed by the Saint Lucia National Trust. The park and its beaches are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Pigeon Island National Landmark (incl. Fort Rodney)
Pigeon Island off Saint Lucia was fortified by the British in the eighteenth century and named for Admiral George Rodney, who used it as a naval base. From its anchorage in 1782 his fleet sailed to defeat the French at the Battle of the Saintes. It served as a lookout and garrison post during Anglo-French rivalry for the Caribbean.
