The site preserves the excavated stone foundations of the Roman fort's walls, gateways, and internal buildings, along with a nearby stretch of the Roman bridge over the River Tees, with much of the fort's plan visible only as low earthworks. It is in the guardianship of English Heritage as a scheduled monument. The site lies in open ground and is freely accessible at any reasonable time.

Piercebridge Roman Fort guarded a crossing of the River Tees where Dere Street, the road linking York to Hadrian's Wall, forded the river. A stone fort was built here in the third century CE, replacing earlier timber defenses of the Roman occupation. It protected troop movements and supplies along this key northern military route for generations.
