HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Philippopolis (Shahba).

Extensive Roman ruins survive at Shahba, including a paved forum, a theater, city gates, a bath complex, and sections of the colonnaded street and city walls built when the emperor Philip the Arab elevated his native village to Philippopolis. The site is under the custodianship of Syria's Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums. It lies in open ground as an archaeological park with generally free access, though visitor conditions have varied amid regional instability.

About Philippopolis (Shahba)

Philippopolis was founded in the mid-third century by the Roman emperor Philip the Arab near his birthplace in the Hauran region. It was laid out with colonnaded streets, a theater, baths, and temples befitting an emperor's hometown. The city declined after his reign but remained a rare case of imperial patronage building an entire Roman city from a village.
