HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Phaistos.

The site preserves the extensive ruins of the second largest Minoan palace complex on Crete, including its grand staircase, central and west courts, storerooms, and workshop areas, with foundations and lower walls standing as excavated original fabric rather than reconstruction. It is managed by the Greek Ministry of Culture through its local antiquities service as a protected archaeological site. Phaistos is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Phaistos

Minoan rulers built the palace of Phaistos on Crete during the Bronze Age as the island's second most important center after Knossos. Destroyed by earthquake and rebuilt around 1600 BCE, its storerooms and courtyards suggest a role managing agriculture and trade across the Mesara plain. It also yielded the Phaistos Disc, an inscribed clay object.
