The cathedral survives essentially complete, a Norman and Gothic building notable for its painted wooden nave ceiling and elaborate west front, with the choir stalls and much medieval fabric intact. It is administered by its Dean and Chapter within the Church of England as a functioning cathedral. It remains an active place of worship and is open to visitors, generally free with a suggested donation.
About Peterborough Cathedral, Cambridgeshire
Peterborough Cathedral grew from a Benedictine abbey rebuilt in the Norman style after fire destroyed the earlier monastery in 1116. Construction continued through the twelfth century, producing one of England's finest Norman naves. The abbey served as a monastic center until the Reformation, when it became an Anglican cathedral and burial place of Catherine of Aragon.
