HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Perugia Historic Centre & Rocca Paolina.

The historic center preserves its medieval and Renaissance streets, the Palazzo dei Priori, and the Fontana Maggiore, while the Rocca Paolina survives chiefly as a buried substructure of vaulted streets and house foundations after the fortress above ground was largely demolished in the nineteenth century. It is managed by the Comune di Perugia. The historic center is an open, inhabited district, and the Rocca Paolina passages are freely accessible via public escalators.

About Perugia Historic Centre & Rocca Paolina

The Rocca Paolina fortress was built in the 1540s under Pope Paul III to assert papal control over Perugia after the Salt War. It rose partly atop the demolished quarter of the noble Baglioni family, whose power the papacy sought to break. The fortress symbolized papal rule until Perugians dismantled it after Italian unification.
