About Pecos County
Pecos County was created from Presidio County in 1871 and organized in 1875, when George M. Frazer was elected chief justice and Fort Stockton was named the county seat. Elected commissioners then governed the sparsely settled ranching community of the far western Texas frontier. The discovery of oil in the Yates field in 1926 later transformed the county's economy.

Formed from Presidio County, created May 3, 1871. Organized March 9, 1875. On March 9, 1875, the following county officers were elected: George M. Frazer, Chief Justice. Cesario Torres, Commissioner. Francis Rooney, Commissioner. Hipolito Carrasco, Commissioner. Martin Huffmann, Commissioner. Fort Stockton, County Seat. Oil was discovered in the Yates field in 1926.
