HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Parco dei Mostri (Sacred Wood of Bomarzo).

The site preserves a collection of large carved stone grotesques, monsters, and allegorical figures set within a wooded garden, along with a tilted small house, all original sixteenth century Mannerist carvings rather than later additions, though vegetation and weathering have altered their setting over time. It is privately owned, currently by the Bettini family, and is not a state monument. The park is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Parco dei Mostri (Sacred Wood of Bomarzo)

Duke Vicino Orsini created the garden in the mid-sixteenth century as a Mannerist park of monumental grotesque sculptures carved from local rock. He commissioned it, likely with the architect Pirro Ligorio, partly as a memorial to his late wife and as an eccentric retreat from courtly life. Its dreamlike imagery departed sharply from formal Renaissance garden design.
