HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Palmanova Star Fort.

The nine-pointed star-shaped ramparts, bastions, moats, and gates of the Venetian fortress town survive substantially in original form, along with its planned hexagonal street grid. The fortifications and historic town are protected by the Italian state and the municipality of Palmanova as a national monument, and the site forms part of a World Heritage Site covering Venetian defensive works. The town is freely accessible, with the ramparts open to the public as parkland and walking paths.

About Palmanova Star Fort

Palmanova was built by the Venetian Republic beginning in 1593 as an ideal fortress city, laid out with a nine-pointed star plan to guard its northeastern border against Ottoman and Habsburg incursions. Its design applied Renaissance theories of fortification and urban planning. It stood as a key stronghold in the Venetian defense system along the Friuli frontier.
