The pentagonal Renaissance palace survives largely intact, including its spiral ramp, circular courtyard, and richly frescoed interior rooms in the Mannerist style. It is Italian state property administered by the Ministry of Culture. The palace is open to the public, with interior rooms generally accessible only on guided tours.
About Palazzo Farnese
The Palazzo Farnese at Caprarola was built in the mid-sixteenth century as a fortified country residence for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, designed by the architect Vignola on a pentagonal plan atop an earlier fortress. Its frescoed halls and terraced gardens showcased Farnese wealth and patronage. It became one of the great monuments of Italian Mannerist architecture.
