HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Palazzo dei Normanni & Cappella Palatina.

The Cappella Palatina survives with its original Byzantine mosaics, cosmatesque floor, and muqarnas ceiling, while the surrounding Norman palace retains portions of its medieval fabric beneath extensive later remodeling. The complex is the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly and forms part of the Arab-Norman Palermo World Heritage Site. Access to the chapel and select palace rooms is by ticket, with visits restricted when the assembly is in session.

About Palazzo dei Normanni & Cappella Palatina

The Palazzo dei Normanni was developed as the royal palace of the Norman kings of Sicily in the twelfth century. Within it, King Roger II founded the Cappella Palatina in 1132 as his private chapel, decorated with Byzantine mosaics and an Islamic muqarnas ceiling. The complex served as the seat of Sicilian royal power and a showcase of Norman-Arab-Byzantine art.
