HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Palais Gallien, Bordeaux.

What survives of the Roman amphitheater of Burdigala is a fragmentary section of its outer wall with several arched openings, most of the structure having been dismantled for building material over the centuries. The ruin is a protected historic monument in the care of the City of Bordeaux. It stands in a small public garden and can be viewed freely from the surrounding street and park.

About Palais Gallien, Bordeaux

The Palais Gallien was built as a Roman amphitheater in Burdigala, present-day Bordeaux, probably in the second or third century CE, to host gladiatorial combats and public games. Despite its name, it had no direct connection to the emperor Gallienus, the association being a later tradition. It served as a major entertainment venue for the Roman provincial city.
