The eighteenth century Baroque facade, arcaded courtyard, and elaborately carved stone portal of the original palace survive largely intact. It is owned by the Banamex banking group and operates as a cultural center known as the Palacio de Cultura Banamex. The building is open to the public for exhibitions and events, with free access to its courtyard and galleries.
About Palacio de Iturbide
The Palacio de Iturbide was built in the late eighteenth century as a lavish townhouse for a wealthy noble family of colonial Mexico City. It later took its name from Agustin de Iturbide, who resided there before being proclaimed emperor of Mexico in 1822. The palace exemplified the ornate Baroque architecture favored by New Spain's colonial elite.
