The Door of No Return is a modern commemorative monument rather than a historic structure, the nearby Python Temple preserves an active vodun shrine building housing live pythons, and the Sacred Forest of Kpassè retains old trees alongside modern sculptures representing vodun deities. The temple is maintained by its local vodun religious community, while the monument and forest fall under municipal and national cultural authorities. All three sites are open to the public, generally for a small admission fee.
About Ouidah (Door of No Return, Python Temple & Sacred Forest of Kpassè)
Ouidah grew from the sixteenth century as a port of the Kingdom of Hueda and a hub of the transatlantic slave trade. Tradition credits its founding to Kpassè, and the city became a Vodun center with a temple devoted to the sacred python. The shoreline point called the Door of No Return marked where enslaved Africans were forced onto ships.
