HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Otranto Cathedral.

The cathedral preserves its Romanesque structure and crypt, and most notably an extensive twelfth century mosaic pavement depicting the Tree of Life, along with a chapel containing the relics of the Martyrs of Otranto. It is owned and maintained by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Otranto. The cathedral remains an active place of worship and is open to visitors.

About Otranto Cathedral

Otranto Cathedral was built in the late eleventh century under Norman rule as the seat of the local bishop. In the twelfth century, the monk Pantaleone laid its mosaic pavement depicting the Tree of Life with biblical and legendary scenes. After the Ottoman sack of Otranto in 1480, the cathedral became a shrine to the townspeople martyred for refusing conversion.
