HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove.

The grove preserves a stretch of riverine forest along the Osun River containing shrines, sculptures, and artworks associated with the Yoruba goddess Osun, many created or restored under the artist Susanne Wenger. It is designated a World Heritage Site and is overseen jointly by Osun State authorities and traditional custodians of the annual festival. The grove is freely accessible as a sacred site and place of pilgrimage, with some structures reserved for ritual use.

About Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove

The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove developed along the Osun River as the principal shrine of the Yoruba river goddess Osun, associated with the founding of Osogbo town in the seventeenth century. Yoruba tradition holds that the town's founders made a pact with Osun in exchange for protection. The grove served for centuries as a site of Yoruba devotion and festival.
