HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Osios Loukas Monastery.
The monastery preserves its katholikon and adjoining Church of the Theotokos largely intact, with extensive original Byzantine mosaics, marble revetment, and crypt frescoes surviving in the katholikon. It is a working monastery under the Greek Orthodox Church and is inscribed as a World Heritage Site. It remains an active place of worship that is also open to visitors.
About Osios Loukas Monastery
Osios Loukas Monastery was founded in the early tenth century around the cell of the hermit monk Luke of Steiris, later venerated as a saint. Byzantine builders erected its katholikon in the eleventh century, decorating it with extensive mosaics. The monastery became one of the most important centers of Middle Byzantine monastic art and architecture in Greece.
