HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Orvieto Cathedral (Duomo).
The cathedral preserves its original medieval striped marble and basalt facade with elaborate gothic mosaics and sculpted reliefs, its Romanesque Gothic nave, and the Chapel of San Brizio with frescoes by Fra Angelico and Luca Signorelli, all substantially original fabric. It is owned and maintained by the Opera del Duomo di Orvieto, a lay religious foundation, and it remains consecrated. The cathedral is open to the public, with the San Brizio chapel accessible on a ticketed basis, and it functions as an active place of worship.
About Orvieto Cathedral (Duomo)
Orvieto Cathedral was begun in 1290 to commemorate the Miracle of Bolsena, a Eucharistic miracle reported in 1263, and to house the relic linen associated with it. Construction continued for centuries under successive architects, most notably Lorenzo Maitani, who designed its elaborate Gothic facade. The cathedral became a major pilgrimage site and a showcase of Italian Gothic art.
