About Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site
Oriskany Battlefield preserves the setting of the August 6, 1777 ambush of Nicholas Herkimer’s relief column marching toward Fort Stanwix. American militia and allied Oneida warriors fought Loyalist troops and Indigenous forces allied with Britain. The battle exposed deep divisions within the region’s communities during the Revolution.
The state historic site protects battlefield terrain, paths, interpretation, and a monument dedicated in 1884. New York manages the site in partnership with the National Park Service. The landscape and later memorial explain the engagement without representing surviving military buildings or an unchanged eighteenth-century scene.
History happened here at Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site
In August 1777, British-led forces besieged Fort Stanwix. Nicholas Herkimer assembled militia and Oneida allies to relieve the fort. On August 6, the column entered an ambush near Oriskany Creek. Fighting at close quarters caused severe losses. Herkimer was wounded and died afterward.
The opposing forces included people with ties to neighboring settlements and different Haudenosaunee nations, making the battle a rupture within communities as well as a military encounter. Although the relief effort was disrupted, resistance at Fort Stanwix continued and the British-led siege eventually ended. Later commemoration created the prominent battlefield monument. The preserved landscape connects this local violence with the larger 1777 campaign in New York.
