HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Old Sarum, Wiltshire.
The site preserves the earthwork ramparts and ditches of the Iron Age hillfort along with the excavated stone foundations of the Norman castle and the footings of the earlier cathedral, whose canons relocated to build Salisbury Cathedral, leaving no superstructure standing. It is managed by English Heritage as a scheduled monument. The ruins stand in open ground and are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Old Sarum, Wiltshire
Old Sarum began as an Iron Age hillfort, later reused as a Roman settlement and then a Saxon stronghold. After the Norman Conquest it became the site of a castle and an early cathedral built within its ramparts. Overcrowding and a lack of water led castle and cathedral to be abandoned for New Salisbury in the thirteenth century.
