HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Old Muscat (Al Jalali & Al Mirani Forts).

Old Muscat retains the two Portuguese built forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani, whose stone bastions and curtain walls stand on rocky promontories flanking the harbor entrance, largely original despite later repairs. Both forts fall under the authority of the Omani government's heritage administration. Al Jalali has occasionally functioned as a museum space, while public access to the forts is limited and mostly restricted to exterior viewing from the harbor and Corniche.

About Old Muscat (Al Jalali & Al Mirani Forts)

Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts were built by the Portuguese in the late sixteenth century to guard the entrance to Muscat harbor after they seized the port. The forts anchored a fortified waterfront that later changed hands between Portuguese, Ottoman, and Omani rule. They secured Muscat's position as a key port in Indian Ocean trade.
