About Old Independence Cemetery
Old Independence Cemetery began around 1823 on a league of land granted to Judge J. P. Cole, one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred colonists. Cole's daughter, Madora Cole McCrocklin, later donated the burial ground to the community. It became a resting place for numerous early Texas statesmen, educators, physicians, lawyers, and war veterans.

A very old graveyard of Anglo-Texas. Started about 1823 on league of Judge J. P. Cole, one of the "Old 300" in the Austin Colony. A daughter, Madora Cole McCrocklin, gave the site.
