About Old Fortress of Corfu
Byzantine builders first fortified the rocky peninsula of Corfu town around the sixth century to defend against seaborne raids. The Venetians substantially rebuilt and expanded the fortress from the sixteenth century onward, adding bastions to guard the harbor and the approach from the Adriatic. It anchored the defense of Corfu for centuries against Ottoman threats.
