About Old Dongola
Old Dongola served as the capital of the medieval Nubian kingdom of Makuria, becoming a major urban and religious center after Nubia's Christianization in the sixth century. The city held churches, a fortified citadel, and monastic buildings reflecting Byzantine influence. It later became a center of Islam after Makuria's decline, when a former church was converted into a mosque.
