The original 1721 brick Custom House survives in Yorktown after substantial twentieth-century restoration. Preserved masonry, interior rooms, architectural details, reconstructed or later dependencies, courtyard walls, and grounds form a historic property maintained for periodic interpretation and events rather than unrestricted daily access.
About Old Customs House
Yorktown’s customs house served the colonial and wartime port economy by regulating shipping and collecting duties. During the 1781 siege, the waterfront town became Cornwallis’s fortified base and suffered allied bombardment. The building represents the commercial setting overtaken by the Revolution’s decisive campaign.
