HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Old City of Zabid.

The Old City of Zabid retains its traditional mud brick and coral stone houses, narrow lanes, and mosques, including the Great Mosque, though many buildings have suffered decay and unregulated modern construction. It is a World Heritage Site, also listed as in danger, under the nominal protection of Yemeni heritage authorities. As a living, inhabited town, it remains freely accessible to visitors.

About Old City of Zabid

The city of Zabid was founded around 820 CE by Muhammad ibn Ziyad and served as the capital of the Ziyadid dynasty on Yemen's coastal plain. It grew into a major center of Islamic scholarship, home to numerous mosques and a renowned university that drew students from across the Islamic world. Zabid anchored regional trade and learning for centuries.
