HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Old City of Sana'a.

The old city preserves its dense fabric of multistory rammed-earth and fired-brick tower houses decorated with white gypsum tracery, along with numerous historic mosques including the Great Mosque of Sana'a and its traditional souk. It is designated a World Heritage Site and falls under the care of Yemen's General Organization for the Preservation of Historic Cities. The old city remains an inhabited urban quarter, generally open to visitors walking its streets and markets.

About Old City of Sana'a

Tradition traces Sana'a to the biblical Shem, son of Noah, though it existed as a South Arabian settlement well before Islam. It grew into a major walled city of multistory tower houses built of rammed earth and brick after Islam arrived in the seventh century. It served for centuries as a political, religious, and trading center of highland Yemen.
