HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Old City (Medina) of Tripoli.

The medina preserves its walled street plan along with Ottoman and Spanish era fortifications, several historic mosques, covered souks, and the adjoining citadel known as the Red Castle. It is nominally under the protection of Libya's Department of Antiquities and local municipal authorities. Access varies with local conditions, and the old city otherwise remains a freely accessible, inhabited urban quarter.

About Old City (Medina) of Tripoli

Tripoli's old city was founded by Phoenician traders as Oea around the seventh century BCE. It later came under Roman and Byzantine rule, during which the Arch of Marcus Aurelius was erected. Under later Arab and Ottoman rule, the medina grew into a walled center of trade, mosques, and craft markets.
