About Old Burial Hill Cemetery
Old Burial Hill contains the graves of General John Glover and other Revolutionary-era residents and soldiers. Glover’s Marblehead regiment provided vital maritime skill during the evacuation from Long Island in 1776 and the Delaware River crossing before the Battle of Trenton. The cemetery commemorates a community whose sailors and soldiers made important contributions to the Patriot cause.
The historic Marblehead burying ground survives on a prominent hill with colonial-era gravestones, tombs, monuments, stone walls, paths, and harbor views. Weathering has damaged many inscriptions, but the maintained municipal cemetery remains publicly accessible as a conserved burial landscape under local rules.
