About Old Baptist Church
The Old Baptist Church congregation at Independence, in the Republic of Texas, organized in 1839. Sam Houston was converted to the Baptist faith here and baptized in nearby Rocky Creek in 1854. The present church building was erected in 1872, reflecting the growth and permanence of the Baptist congregation in early Texas.
