HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Oakland Cemetery.
The cemetery preserves its Victorian-era landscaping, mausoleums, and monuments, including the Confederate section, African American Grounds, and Jewish grounds, largely original nineteenth and twentieth century fabric. It is owned by the City of Atlanta and maintained in partnership with a nonprofit conservancy, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is freely open to the public as walking grounds, with guided tours offered separately.
About Oakland Cemetery
Oakland Cemetery was established in 1850 as Atlanta's first municipal burial ground. It became the resting place for thousands of Confederate soldiers after the Civil War, as well as notable Atlantans such as novelist Margaret Mitchell and golfer Bobby Jones. Laid out in the Victorian rural cemetery style, it also served as a public garden for the city.
