HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Nzulezu Stilt Village.
The village survives as a working settlement of wooden houses, a church, a school, and other structures built on stilts above Lake Tadane, reached and traversed largely by canoe. It is governed by local traditional and community authorities and is on Ghana's tentative list for World Heritage recognition. The village is open to visitors, generally accompanied by a local guide.
About Nzulezu Stilt Village
Nzulezu was built entirely on stilts over Lake Tadane in western Ghana by ancestors of the Nzema people, traditionally said to date from several centuries ago. According to oral tradition, the community's founders were led to the site by a giant snail during their migration. The stilt village sustained a fishing and farming community on the water.
