Built by Thomas Nutter in 1772 after settlement two years earlier. Nutter was a captain in the Revolutionary Army and is buried here. Refugees from Hacker's Creek settlements came here during the Indian raids of 1779.

Thomas Nutter built this frontier fort in 1772 and later served as a captain in the Revolutionary forces. During Native raids in 1779, settlers from the Hacker’s Creek area took refuge within its defenses. Nutter’s Fort illustrates the different character of the Revolution on the western frontier, where isolated communities faced warfare and displacement far from the main armies.
