The church preserves its Romanesque nave and its celebrated carved west facade, largely intact from the twelfth century despite later restoration to some sculptural details. It belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Poitiers and is a classified historic monument of France. It remains an active parish church, freely open to visitors.
About Notre-Dame-la-Grande
Notre-Dame-la-Grande was built in Poitiers during the eleventh and twelfth centuries as a parish and pilgrimage church on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Its west facade was carved with an elaborate sculpted program depicting biblical scenes for the instruction of illiterate worshippers. The church remained a center of local devotion and Romanesque art in Poitou.
