About Notre-Dame-la-Grande

Notre-Dame-la-Grande was built in Poitiers during the eleventh and twelfth centuries as a parish and pilgrimage church on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Its west facade was carved with an elaborate sculpted program depicting biblical scenes for the instruction of illiterate worshippers. The church remained a center of local devotion and Romanesque art in Poitou.
