HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Noto.

Noto preserves an exceptionally coherent townscape of golden limestone Baroque churches, palaces, and streetscapes, largely rebuilt in a unified style after the town's earlier settlement was destroyed by a seventeenth century earthquake, including the rebuilt Noto Cathedral, whose dome and nave partially collapsed in 1996 and were subsequently reconstructed. The town falls under the Sicilian regional heritage authorities and local municipal administration, and it is part of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto World Heritage Site. It functions as a living town, freely accessible in its public spaces, with the cathedral open as an active place of worship.

About Noto

Noto was rebuilt on a new site beginning in the early eighteenth century after the great earthquake of 1693 destroyed the original hilltop town of Noto Antica. Architects and craftsmen reconstructed it in the Sicilian Baroque style, using local golden limestone for its churches, palaces, and civic buildings. It became a showcase of Baroque urban planning in southeastern Sicily.
