HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Norcia.

Norcia retains its largely intact medieval and Renaissance circuit of walls, the Castellina fortress, and the arcaded Palazzo Comunale, while the facade of the Basilica of San Benedetto survived the 2016 earthquake even though its nave and bell tower collapsed. The historic center falls under the stewardship of the Comune of Norcia together with Italy's Ministry of Culture for its protected monuments. The walled town is freely accessible, with its streets, squares, and ramparts open to the public.

About Norcia

Norcia grew from an ancient Sabine hill settlement into the Roman municipium of Nursia, an agricultural and trading town in the Apennines. It later became renowned as the birthplace of Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica in the fifth century, founders of Western monasticism. The town remained a regional market center for grain, livestock, and cured meats for centuries.
