HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Nizwa Fort.

Nizwa Fort preserves its massive circular tower, the adjoining rectangular castle with its courtyards and reception rooms, and defensive features such as a deep well, gun ports, and murder holes built to repel attackers. It is maintained by Oman's Ministry of Heritage and Tourism as a protected historic monument. The fort is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Nizwa Fort

Nizwa Fort was built in the seventeenth century under Imam Sultan bin Saif al-Ya'rubi as the stronghold of the Ya'rubid dynasty and seat of government for interior Oman. Its massive circular tower, among the largest in Arabia, defended the town and controlled nearby trade and date palm oases. It anchored Ya'rubid power against rival tribes and European incursions.
