Ninety Six developed at an important crossroads and became a fortified Loyalist stronghold. It witnessed an early Revolutionary battle in November 1775. From May 22 to June 20, 1781, Nathanael Greene's army besieged the Star Fort using trenches, artillery, and an assault tower before withdrawing as a British relief column approached.

Nathanael Greene besieged the British in Star Fort, May 22-June 20, 1781.
