The site preserves extensive ruins of the Roman city founded by Augustus, including a theater, odeon, aqueduct remains, and fortification walls, standing as excavated ruins across open ground rather than reconstructions. It is under Greek state ownership and managed by the Ministry of Culture. The archaeological site is open to the public, generally by ticketed entry.
About Nicopolis
Nicopolis, the City of Victory, was founded by Octavian, later emperor Augustus, around 29 BCE to commemorate his naval victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra at Actium. He resettled inhabitants from surrounding Epirote and Acarnanian towns into the new city. Nicopolis grew into a major provincial capital and hosted the Actian Games, a Panhellenic festival.
