About New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site (Temple of Virtue)
New Windsor Cantonment in New York housed the Continental Army during the final winter and spring of the Revolutionary War. Washington addressed discontented officers here on March 15, 1783. The historic grounds and reconstructed Temple of Virtue interpret the army’s difficult transition from active service to peace.
New York State Parks protects the cantonment grounds and interprets military life through exhibits and demonstrations. The Temple of Virtue is a reconstruction of the camp’s multipurpose meeting building. It provides a setting for interpretation rather than an unchanged room surviving from Washington’s address.
History happened here at New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site (Temple of Virtue)
Washington moved his northern army to New Windsor in October 1782. Soldiers built hundreds of log huts for winter quarters. Women, children, and civilian refugees also lived in the encampment. Although major fighting had diminished after Yorktown, peace negotiations continued and the army still faced uncertainty over wages, pensions, and its future.
On March 15, 1783, Washington addressed officers in the New Building, also called the Temple of Virtue, urging them to reject measures that challenged civilian authority. In April he announced the cessation of hostilities. The cantonment was separate from his residence at the Hasbrouck House in Newburgh. Its history joins the practical life of a large military camp with the political challenge of ending the war.
