HISTORIC PRESERVATION at New Echota Historic Site (former Cherokee Nation capital).
New Echota preserves several reconstructed and a few original nineteenth century buildings associated with the former Cherokee national capital, including a reconstructed council house and print shop along with the original Vann Tavern and Worcester House, set on the original townsite. It is managed as a Georgia state historic site by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis with a visitor center and grounds.
About New Echota Historic Site (former Cherokee Nation capital)
The Cherokee Nation established New Echota in 1825 as its capital, with a council house and the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper office. In 1835 a minority faction signed the Treaty of New Echota there, ceding Cherokee lands in the southeast to the United States. The treaty became the legal basis for the forced removal known as the Trail of Tears.
