HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Netley Abbey, Hampshire.
Netley Abbey survives as an extensive roofless ruin of its medieval Cistercian church and monastic ranges, later partly adapted into a Tudor mansion whose alterations are still visible within the older stonework. It is in the guardianship of English Heritage and is a scheduled monument. It is freely accessible to the public in open parkland.
About Netley Abbey, Hampshire
Netley Abbey was founded in 1239 as a Cistercian monastery, colonized by monks from Beaulieu Abbey under the patronage of Henry III. It was dissolved in 1536 during Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries and subsequently converted into a Tudor mansion. In the eighteenth century the site drew antiquarians and artists as an early emblem of the Gothic revival.
