HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Nelson Island.
Nelson Island preserves former quarantine and detention station buildings, including barrack structures and administrative buildings, from its use in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with the fabric in a weathered and partially deteriorated state. The island is under the ownership of the Trinidad and Tobago government and is designated for heritage protection. Access is limited, generally requiring an organized boat tour rather than independent visitation.
About Nelson Island
Nelson Island served in the nineteenth century as a quarantine and immigration depot where indentured laborers from India were processed before entering Trinidad. In the twentieth century it was used as a detention facility holding political prisoners, including labor leaders and, in 1970, Black Power movement detainees. The island played successive roles in Trinidad's labor and political history.
