HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Mykonos Windmills & Little Venice.

The windmills preserve their stone towers along the ridge above town, several with restored thatch or wooden sail mechanisms, while the Little Venice district preserves its row of old waterfront houses with wooden balconies overhanging the sea, largely original construction with some restoration. They are under Greek state heritage protection as part of the Mykonos townscape. Both areas are freely accessible as part of the open town, with the windmill interiors not generally open.

About Mykonos Windmills & Little Venice

The windmills of Mykonos were built from the sixteenth century onward to harness strong Aegean winds for grinding wheat, central to the island's grain economy. Little Venice, the adjoining waterfront quarter, grew later as a neighborhood of merchant houses built directly over the sea and used by captains and traders. Together they reflected the island's role in Aegean commerce.
