HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Museo Nacional y Centro de Investigación de Altamira.

The complex includes the original painted cave, largely closed to general visitors to protect its Paleolithic art, an adjoining full scale facsimile known as the Neocueva, and a research museum holding artifacts from the site. It is administered by Spain's Ministry of Culture and forms part of a World Heritage Site for Paleolithic cave art in northern Spain. The museum and facsimile are open to the public on a ticketed basis, with access to the original cave tightly restricted.

About Museo Nacional y Centro de Investigación de Altamira

The Altamira cave, discovered in 1879, held Upper Paleolithic polychrome paintings of bison and other animals dating to between roughly 36,000 and 13,000 years ago. The paintings initially met scholarly skepticism about their prehistoric origin before later acceptance. The national museum and research center built beside the cave served study and interpretation of Paleolithic art.
