HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Museo delle Mura & Porta San Sebastiano.
The site preserves Porta San Sebastiano, the best preserved gate of the Aurelian Walls with its twin flanking towers, along with an adjoining stretch of the ancient walls that now houses the Museum of the Walls and can be walked along an elevated passage. It is managed by the municipal government of Rome through its Sovrintendenza Capitolina. The museum and wall walkway are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Museo delle Mura & Porta San Sebastiano
Porta San Sebastiano was the principal gate of Rome's Aurelian Walls, built in the third century CE to defend the city and later reinforced under Byzantine rule. It marked the start of the ancient Via Appia leading south from Rome and controlled traffic and defense along that route. The gate exemplified the fortification of Rome as imperial power declined.
