HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Muckross House & Gardens.

The nineteenth century Tudor-revival mansion survives largely intact with its furnished interiors, along with the surrounding walled and rock gardens, farm buildings, and the ruins of nearby Muckross Abbey within the same grounds. The property lies within Killarney National Park and is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on behalf of the Irish state. The gardens are freely accessible, while the house is open to the public on a ticketed, guided basis.

About Muckross House & Gardens

Muckross House was built in 1843 for the Herbert family as a Tudor-style country mansion on the shore of Muckross Lake near Killarney. Queen Victoria stayed there during her 1861 visit to Ireland, an occasion that strained the family's finances for decades. In 1932 the estate was donated to the Irish state, becoming the founding property of Killarney National Park.
