Muckross Abbey preserves its roofless Franciscan church, central crossing tower, and cloister arcade, the latter shaded by a well known yew tree, along with adjoining domestic ranges now in ruin. It lies within Killarney National Park and is managed by Ireland's Office of Public Works as a National Monument. The ruins stand in open ground and are freely accessible to visitors at all times.
About Muckross Abbey
Muckross Abbey was founded around 1448 for Franciscan friars under the patronage of Donal McCarthy Mor, a local chieftain, near Killarney. It served as a center of worship and became a burial place for regional chieftains, bards, and clergy. The friary endured suppression and attack over the centuries but remained a focus of local religious life.
